Stockport SWIP Internal Wall Insulation: Case Study

Introduction: Solving Cold Room Issues in a Solid Wall Home
At Edge Energy Performance Company, we specialise in making homes warmer, more efficient, and comfortable through expert insulation solutions. Recently, we worked with Mr & Mrs H in Stockport, Manchester who contacted us at the beginning of 2025 to address an ongoing issue in their home: their main living room felt significantly colder than the rest of the house due to its three exposed external walls.
The property, a traditionally constructed solid wall home, had been nicely renovated, but this particular room remained difficult to keep warm. After conducting a full survey, we proposed a SWIP 95mm Internal Wall Insulation System, offering both thermal efficiency and minimal disruption.

The Challenge: Balancing Insulation with Aesthetic Features
A key challenge when insulating older homes is preserving traditional features such as coving, skirting boards, and architraves. Mr & Mrs H wanted to ensure that these architectural details were either maintained or sympathetically replaced.
Additionally, they required extra electrical sockets as part of the room upgrade. Since our insulation installation process already required extending existing sockets, we offered to add additional ones at cost, making it a cost-effective upgrade.

Our Insulation Solution: The SWIP Internal Wall Insulation System
For this project, we recommended and installed the SWIP 95mm Internal Wall Insulation System, a high-performance solution ideal for solid wall properties. The system components included:
SWIP Insulated Battens – Providing a sturdy, thermally broken framework.
SWIP ECO Batt Insulation – Cut to fit seamlessly between the battens for excellent thermal efficiency.
SWIP 27mm Reveal Insulation – Eliminating cold spots and thermal bridging around window reveals.
SWIP Vapour Control Layer (VCL) – Preventing moisture from penetrating the insulation system.
SWIP Sealant – Ensuring airtightness for improved energy efficiency.
This system significantly reduced heat loss while maintaining a breathable construction, ideal for a solid wall home like Mr & Mrs H’s.

The Installation Process: Ensuring a High-Quality Finish
Preparation & Insulation Installation: Our experienced internal wall insulation installers fitted the SWIP system efficiently while ensuring minimal disruption to the home.
Electrical Work: Our qualified electrician extended the existing sockets and installed additional power points as requested.
Plastering: Once the insulation system was in place, we applied a smooth plaster finish, ready for decorating.
Joinery & Coving Restoration: Our joiner fitted the new deeper skirting boards, sourced to match the customer’s preferred style. The original coving was carefully profiled and reproduced by Gazelle Art Plaster, ensuring a perfect match to maintain the character of the room.
Final Touches & Handover: After all elements were installed, we completed a final quality check, provided a warranty and handover pack, and ensured the customer was fully satisfied.

The Result: A Warmer, More Comfortable Living Space
By installing the SWIP internal wall insulation system, we transformed Mr & Mrs H’s cold living room into a warm, energy-efficient space that blends seamlessly with the rest of their home. They now enjoy enhanced thermal comfort, reduced heating costs, and a beautifully finished room that retains its original period charm.
